More Good News!!

The loons are nesting!!

I know this isn’t’ a very good photo of the nesting site.  But I didn’t dare get any closer.  As with eagles, loons need a wide berth . . . a two hundred foot berth.  If she (or he) leaves the nest for a significant amount of time, the egg won’t survive.

Or a crow could get it.

Or a raccoon.

Buuuuuut, I have more exciting news!  As part of my Mother’s Day present, hubby has rented me a super, duper camera lens!  I have it for a whole week!

Imagine . . .

Crystal clear eagle photos . . .

Astounding loons photos . . .

In fact, if all nature would just look my way . . . and on the count of three, smile pretty!

Mother/Child Moments

I still can’t get over the fact that there’s three . . . count them, THREE . . .

. . . baby eaglets in the nest.

I mean, having two is rare.

Three is a miracle!

I managed to snap some more mother/child photos over the weekend,

o.

Everyone here in the campground is enthralled with them!  It’s all we talk about.   “Are there still three?  What are the chances they’ll all survive?”

(and I’m about to post some different photos over on Maxwell Moose’s blog)

Yesterday, I couldn’t quite figure out what Mama eagle was up to.  The babies were crying.  Yet, she kept flying away. She was never out of sight of the nest though, and would return a few minutes later with nothing in her talons.  She’d float above the nest, circling it . . .

While they followed her with their eyes.

Eventually she joined her babies again.  Ducking her head, she began tugging something large across the nest to its edge.  A huge fish!  It must have been there the whole time. She ripped pieces off, then fed her hungry little ones.

It seems she was trying to teach them to eat on their own, which usually happens at 10 – 13 weeks.  I think it’s a little early for that, but with three in the nest, can you blame her?

Eagle Baby Reveal

I know you’ve all been waiting patiently for an eagle baby update.  So even though I was practically falling asleep on my feet today after the campground opening, I grabbed the extra long camera lens, and the tripod, and headed down to the lake’s edge.

I’m wicked excited to report . . . there’s not just one baby . . .

Or twoooooo. . . .

It’s triplets!!!

Whoa!!!  How cool is that??

One or Two?

These aren’t the best photos I’ve taken in recent weeks, but they’re proof!

I tried to hold the camera still as I was pushed and pulled by the sheer strength of the wind as it whipped across the point yesterday. My hands felt frozen solid within minutes. White caps dotted the lake, while every tree on the eagle’s island swayed back and forth.  Except their tree, thank goodness.

I saw flapping wings and a head poking up here . . .

and there (a little gray blog to the right) . . .

and here again . . .

I never saw two heads at the same time . . . but I suspect there’s two of them!

Painted Turtles

On one of my last kayaking trips, before the weather turned so chilly again, I happened upon a turtle haven.  Soooooo many turtles had ventured out of the lake to sun themselves on logs and muddy banks.

There had to be at least 30 of them!  They were quite comical, too.   Whenever a large bird flew overhead, they all just fell in the lake.  Two minutes later, I’d see little heads poke out of the water . . .

then I’d see plants swaying back and forth as they slowly made their way back into the sun.

A couple of the turtles had some really strange sunbathing poses:

No matter how this guy waved his legs and tried, he did NOT get off the log the first two times the others felt danger and fell in the lake.

And neither did this guy!

Turtle butt!

Thank goodness there wasn’t a fox or a raccoon or a heron nearby . . .

Or an eagle . . .

The Perfect Kayak Ride

I almost didn’t go . . .

I mentally counted all the things on my April Vacation to-do list;  such as cleaning the house, the car, the campground office.  Raking and beautifying the campground entrance.  Laundry.  Eradicating dust bunnies. Ordering for the store.

“You only have three days to tackle that list,” my task-master self, scolded my girls-just-wanna-have-fun self.  “Then you’re off to the writing conference.”

With 80 degree temps and the birds singing outside the office window, my task-master self didn’t stand a chance.  And I’m soooo glad!   I wasn’t on the lake for ten minutes when I found myself amongst not one . . .

Waggling a foot and preening

Preening

Not two . . .

Resurfacing

Or even three loons . . .

But four, feeding together.

They were so much fun to watch.  I heard soft hooting when one or more found themselves separated from the group.  Whenever the eagle neared, they cried in warning to each other.   I sat, teary eyed (yes, I’m a sap) watching as they searched for their next meal . . .

I was so in awe of their beauty and grace.

They obviously haven’t laid eggs yet because one parent is always on the nest. But I don’t think it will be long now.  I happen to know their favorite spot, so I’ll keep you posted.

As I left the loons to head for home, I heard a familiar cry.  I couldn’t quite place where I’d heard it before, so I followed the sound into a small inlet, which I know from experience is home to many wildlife.  I quietly paddled my way in and stumbled upon this . . .

Can you see two eagles?

Two eagles flapping around on the ground.  At first, I thought they were mating, but  I quickly decided they were battling.  The eagle who’s harder to see, looked much like a juvenile.  I have seen adult eagles chase off young ones before.

Then I wondered if they were locked together.  In my research, I’d read how that can happen, sometimes in mid-air, tumbling to their deaths. Just as I was wondering who I’d call in a situation like this, they broke apart, shook themselves off and after several warning squawks, headed in opposite directions.

I paddled for home, happy to see Ben and Cookie waiting for me on shore.

As I snapped photos of them, the second eagle came in for a landing on the nest and I couldn’t resist a few more pictures . . .

I have so many more amazing photos, but I think I’ll save those for another post.

For the three hours I was on the lake today, I felt as if I was channeling the main character from the middle grade series I’ve been cautiously submitting.  Now I’m more determined than ever to find a home for my story.

If you’d like to see more photos from that day, you can also check out Maxwell Moose’s blog, on our campground website.

Time To Write

As of last night I was still pecking away at research for the shiny new project I’m going to call Lillie, for now.   I  love, love, love research!  Learning about new things fascinates me.  One click here, leads to a click on another website, which leads to an article about xyz  ~  and three hours later hubby’s asking why I’m still up on a school night while I argue like one of our kids:

“One more minute! I just have to read this one last thing – ”

But there comes a time to put the research away . . . where it becomes more of a procrastination tool than a learning tool. I think maybe that time is now . . .I have scenes forming in my head and my character is very, very clear to me.

I’m rolling up my sleeves and digging in!

Wish me luck!

My Feet In The Lake In March – Gotta Be A First!

Not only did I wear my flip flops today, but I waded into the lake too. Temperatures here in Maine  hovered in the 80’s for a few days in a row now.  Mud season has come and gone a full month ahead of schedule.  Moths flutter around my porch light, my windows are open at 9pm and a few peepers can be heard in the distance.

The lake water was still pretty cold, icy even.  I’d worked up a slight sweat walking down to the water, so I didn’t mind.  It was so warm, the nesting eagle sat on the edge of her nest.  I’m sure the eggs were warm enough in the sun. Hopefully not too warm.

Across the lake, I spied the other eagle, sitting on a log in the water.  He seemed to be eating something, or perhaps preening . . . taking a bath?

In the distance, I saw a pair of loons diving.

I was in heaven!  And I remember thinking to myself;

Wow, what an awesome day.  It can’t get any better than this.

And then I witnessed this:

The eagle parents switching places!  It all happened in a matter of seconds, so I’m glad I had my camera trained on the nest to catch it.

I <3 Blank Pages

The kids at school were grumbling about having to come up with new writing ideas all the time.  Some of them find it hard, even with a writing prompt.  I understand what they’re saying, but oh, how I love starting a brand new manuscript!   So many choices to make.  So many paths the character could take.  What is their fatal flaw, their positive trait, their setting? Who are their friends?  Their enemies?

What is their greatest *want* in life?

One specific choice can take your story flowing to the left, while another can take it right.

Some nights, I sit in front of the computer doing nothing but surfing for a photo of what I imagine my character looks like.  Mostly, I find myself completely, utterly, happily  lost in a sea research for what will be the theme of the story.  That’s my favorite part of pre-writing.

I actually have two ideas percolating right now.  The contemporary idea is developed enough that I’ve begun to write a scene here and there as I sketch out the final details.  The other is still in the planning/research stage, another sci-fi adventure.  This is exactly where I wanted to be, at this time of the year.  Our campground phone is ringing more and more every day.   Opening weekend is already booked solid!

After that, I won’t find many large chunks of time to write, which is my favorite kind.  But  small chunks of time are perfect for research, writing a scene here and a scene there, basically getting my feet wet in the project.  Come next September, I’ll be able to take off  with one or both ideas!

Our Eagles are Nesting!

I went to the lake yesterday, but came back a little sad.

Usually by now, our eagles are nesting. Yet there was no sign of them with the naked eye, or through the telephoto lens.  My campers have been asking and I hated to pass on bad news yet again.  I didn’t even bother to download the photos I’d taken.

I trudged back down to the lakefront again today, Cookie in tow.  A lone ice fisherman stood a few yards from the eagle’s island. As he pulled his sled off to another fishing hole, I heard an eagle cry from well off to the right by the beaver hut.

And suddenly, my day got a little brighter.

Mama eagle poked her head up

She’s laid her eggs!

*happy dance*

I raced home to edit my pictures and wasn’t I surprise to see, when I cropped yesterday’s photo, to see this

Did you find her?  Just a touch to the right of the center of the nest?  She was there the whole time.

I just needed to have a little faith.

And I’m going to take that thought with me into this next week.
